It’s time for another issue of Afternoon T – our fortnightly fashion and lifestyle newsletter, bringing you news, events and inspiration from the creative industries.
In issue 2 we’re talking spring – as the days get longer and the weather improves, we’re thinking about our new season wardrobe and the trends we’ll be trying out. Vivid colour, extra-long earrings and graphic stripes, anyone?
Your spring wardrobe
Time to pack away your heavy knitwear and chunky boots – spring is finally on the way! And even though there’s still a chill in the air, right now is a great time to start thinking about your new season wardrobe. There are plenty of trends to try – but which ones are right for you? Here’s a round-up of our favourites…
Rainbow clashes were seen at Christopher Kane, Gucci and Balmain, where bright oranges were paired with emerald greens and shocking pinks. If that sounds a bit full on for you, introduce pops of colour with jewellery instead – our Ithaca necklace in Neon fits the bill perfectly.
Extra long earrings
A trend that’s right up our street – shoulder-grazing earrings are elegant, modern and so easy to work into your existing wardrobe. Choose a slender style like our HRH in Arctic Blue, or mix and match two different pairs a la Celine and JW Anderson.
Stripes are forever fashionable but for spring 2016, they’ve had a mini makeover. Designers like Missoni, Roksanda and Prada have reworked the classic look to embrace scattered, wavy lines that are perfectly paired with classic denim.
When it comes to fashion we don’t really believe in rules, but there is one we always follow – statement necklace OR statement earrings, never together.
Of course, the fashion industry is inherently rebellious and rules are made to be broken. ‘Jewellery layering’ was pioneered by Gucci at their SS16 show, where models strutted down the catwalk wearing every accessory imaginable, from berets and brooches to necklaces and earrings. Quelle horror!
It’s a trend we won’t be trying here at Toolally HQ – we’re firm believers in wearing one piece at a time. Jewellery can be the focus of an outfit or the subtle finishing touch, but we think it should always be given space to shine. As Coco Chanel herself once said…
“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
But what do you think – would you give jewellery layering a go? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.
Event – Designs of the Year
The annual Designs of the Year Awards exhibition is a great chance to see beautiful, practical and clever design up close. At the Design Museum in Bermondsey until 3rd April, it showcases stunning architecture, futuristic fashion, stylish furniture and so much more, with pieces from all over the world. Some ideas are so inventive you’ll wish you came up with them yourself, while others are simply gorgeous to look at.
Nominees this year include Paul Cocksedge Studio’s Double O bike lights and a reimagining of the kettle that heats directly in the mug. Go and get inspired.
