How to care for your jewellery on the ski slopes
Ski Season is officially upon us, and if you’re planning on shredding some snow you’ve probably had a thought or two about your winter wardrobe. Once you’ve figured out what you’re wearing on holiday, you’re onto stage two - accessories. When it comes to jewellery on the slopes and in cold weather, there’s a definite list of dos and don’ts. Look to this handy guide for help on what to bring, how to care for your jewellery in the mountains, and how to pack for your holiday.
Pack light
If you’re stuffing your suitcase with thermals and big coats, chances are you won’t have room for much else, and you don’t want to risk damaging your jewellery in the process. Tempting as it can be to pack an assortment of jewellery to go with every outfit, rein it in a little and try to find timeless pieces that go with everything. Winter wear is about comfortable elegance, and building a cosy capsule wardrobe of items that align is probably your best bet. These silver studs are easy to pack and on-theme, replicating two crossed skis in the snow.
Durable materials
Be sure to consider how hardy your jewellery is. Acrylic pieces are too delicate for snow sports and run the risk of getting broken, while costume jewellery is susceptible to becoming tarnished and ruined. Opt instead for your tough metals that will stand the test of snow and potential crashes! Silver and gold run less risk of rusting, tarnishing or scratching. Plus, they look stunning in the snow, and are a surefire way to make your outfit shine.
Silver and gold in the snow
There are a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to caring for your jewellery. Snow and water is unlikely to tarnish your silver or gold, however chemicals such as chlorine may lead to damage and darkening. For this reason, we recommend removing all jewellery before hopping into a hot tub or swimming pool après ski. On the slopes, your jewellery should be fine, if you look after it…
Keep an eye
Don’t let it become an annoyance, but remember what you arrived with so you don’t lose anything! Fingers have a tendency to grow when they’re pumped up from exercise or are warm, so if your hands get a bit chilly while you’ve removed a glove to sup a hot chocolate at a mountainside caff, count your rings as you pop your mittens back on, making sure you haven’t flung one off into the snow somewhere.
On a similar note, removing hats, ear muffs, goggles and helmets mean earrings can become caught. Be careful of this, the last thing you want is to lose precious jewellery on holiday.
When it comes to pendants and necklaces, be wary of knitwear and snagging. You don’t want to break any clasps or get annoying bits of fluff in between the chains.
What jewellery is in for ski season 24-25?
Pearls: timeless, elegant, and gorgeous in the snow. Beautiful with your sportswear and après-ski.
Animal print: with faux fur textures in this season and leopard print never going out of style, animal print earrings that match your après ski attire is a no brainer.
Huggies: They’ll make your outfit even cooler on the slopes, and don’t run a high danger of getting lost or broken.
Pendants: Your best friend - subtle glam on the slopes and sparkly après ski. Be sure to select a pendant that isn’t too large and won’t get in the way. Also make sure it's comfortable and doesn’t pose risk of injury. Choosing a pendant that makes a personal statement will bring extra flair to your fit.
Studs: Classic, simple, gorgeous, and risk-minimal.
Most importantly - have fun with your outfit this year! Whether you’re an avid skier, or a bit of a snow bum, ski season is one of the best times to dress up and express your personality through your style. With a bit of careful planning and packing, you’ll be the best-dressed queen of the mountain.
