Gold is not a very strong metal, and for this reason requires a base metal underneath. Some jewellery brands use cheaper metals such as brass and copper, but we use sterling 925 silver at Toolally, then plate it with a thick layer of 18ct gold on the surface. 

Silver is a metal that oxidises when exposed to air and moisture, and sometimes these elements can penetrate the gold and affect the silver base underneath.
