There’s something about spring that makes us feel like romance is in the air — and what better way to get into the spirit of things than by revisiting a classic rom-com (or five)? Which got us thinking… if these iconic female leads wore Toolally, which pairs would they pick?
Maybe it’s the impending arrival of pretty flower blossoms, or perhaps it’s the knowledge that soon we’ll be seeing red skies at night from our windows. But as the seasons start to change, we can feel ourselves reaching the rose-tinted glasses — and sensing romance in the air.
And while we wait for spring to be in full swing, we find that there’s no better way to channel that loving feeling by revisiting some of our favourite classic romantic comedies.
Truthfully, we never need an excuse to enjoy the likes of Bridget, Sally and Vivian falling head over heels in love (and tripping over a few obstacles along the way). But this year, we’re doing a bit of matchmaking of our own while we watch — deciding which Toolallys we’d pair with these iconic heroines.
Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones Diary
Terrible cook, hapless reporter and maker of New Year’s resolutions she’ll never keep — let’s hear it for the most relatable romantic lead of all time: Bridget Jones. Watching Bridget get stuck between uptight Mark Darcy and smarmy charmer Daniel Cleaver never gets old — and what better pair of earrings to represent Bridget’s troublesome love triangle than our angular Arrows?
Sally Albright in When Harry Met Sally
Can a man and a woman ever just be friends? That’s the question at the heart of this classic will-they-won’t-they story, as Meg Ryan’s Sally and Billy Crystal’s Harry spend years moving in and out of each other’s lives, only to realise the inevitable. Sally’s a woman of serious 1980s style, but there’s one accessory that can’t help bring to mind that unforgettable deli scene — our Tiger Shell Ohs.
Ruby Sheridan in Mamma Mia:
Here We Go Again
OK, she might not be your traditional rom-com heroine. But Cher’s unmissable cameo in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — as an aloof stage star finally reuniting with her long lost love Fernando — is cinematic proof that true romance has no time limit. Someone this fabulous needs a fitting pair of earrings; our silver Ellipses are just perfect.
Tracy Lord – The Philadelphia Story
Katharine Hepburn’s iconic turn as Tracy Lord, a whip smart and wealthy socialite, is stuff of cinematic legend. Independent, self-possessed and seriously well-dressed, we doubt she’d have just one pair of earrings in her jewellery box. But we’d style her in our elegant, limited edition Flameball Pearls — each pair completely unique, just like the film’s star.
Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman
When we first meet Julia Roberts’ Vivian, on Hollywood Boulevard’s red light district, she’s down on her luck and struggling to make ends meet — a far cry from the woman we leave as the story ends. And her transformation during the film is about much more than just her clothes; she becomes confident, assured and aware of her own self-worth. The perfect pair for her? It has to be our gold Sundial statement earrings; anything less would be a big mistake. Huge.
